Matt Griffin

Our brother and friend, Matt Griffin, was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) this past May 2007. While he continues to make strides in his fight, he still needs your support. Click here to read more at his caring bridge site.

Below is a message from Ashlea Montgomery in part thanks to all who partcipated in the August 10th fundraiser and in part to show how you can still help.

"I just wanted to thank so many of you for coming to the fundraiser this past Friday night in honor of your brother, Matthew Griffin. There were so many of you!!! :) Thank you for supporting the spaghetti dinner and silent auction. We were already able to raise $8,000 dollars. Many of you donated items to be auctioned and I so appreciated that as did Matthew and his family. You can click here and go to the "Journal" section to read his letter of appreciation. You can also sign on to leave him a message. If you haven't signed his "guest book," please let me encourage you to do that. He is checking the site daily and it encourages him so much. He is actually starting his 3rd round of chemo today.

I am still being contacted as to how people can help. There are actually a couple of ways. First, we will continue to accept donations made out to "The Marrow Foundation" and put Matthew Griffin in the memo section. This is his own personal account through the NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program)and will help fund our donor drive on August 25th. You can mail those to: Ashlea Montgomery 45 Balmoral Court Eads, TN 38028. The second way you can help is to attend our donor drive. Again, that will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2007 from 10am-2pm. This is the same location where the auction/dinner was held. First Assembly of God/(FACS)First Assembly Christian School, 8650 Walnut Grove Road. Memphis, TN. The cost is 1/2 price for the first 100 people to be tested then $52 per person. We will use the fundraising money until it is exhausted. Our goal is to have many, many, many people tested. Again, thank you so much for your love, prayers, support and donations.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me."

Sincerely,

Ashlea Montgomery

Epsilon Kappa Wins Peterson and Legion of Honor Awards

The University of Memphis chapter of Sigma Chi International Fraternity has won its third straight Peterson Award, the highest honor the fraternity bestows on an individual chapter. Only five to 10 percent of the 220 Sigma Chi chapters receive this recognition. The award was presented at the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop, attended by more than 1,700 Sigma Chi students from across North America, including 14 from the U of M.

Additionally, the Memphis chapter received the Legion of Honor Award, given to the top five chapters for academic excellence. This is the first time the Memphis chapter has received the Legion of Honor and the seventh time it has received the Peterson.

International Sweetheart Amy Jackson, a U of M alumna, also attended the workshop. She participated in the discussion groups and spoke to the entire workshop.

U of M Alumna Named International Sigma Chi Sweetheart

Amy Jackson, a recent University of Memphis graduate, was selected by Sigma Chi Fraternity as its new International Sweetheart at the fraternity's Grand Chapter meeting last month in Cincinnati, where the fraternity celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Jackson was one of three finalists for the honor. Candidates are selected on the basis of their involvement with their university campuses and local Sigma Chi chapters, their community service, academic performance, character, and personality.

Jackson is also the sweetheart of the U of M Sigma Chi chapter and the reigning Miss University of Memphis. She was awarded the Gov.
